SMP Guide
Scalp Micropigmentation: A Complete Guide
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical treatment that restores the look of density and definition to the scalp using tiny, layered pigment deposits that mimic natural hair follicles. Here's everything you should know before booking your consultation.
What is scalp micropigmentation?
SMP uses a fine, specialized needle to deposit cosmetic pigment into the upper layers of the scalp. Each dot is placed to replicate the size, shape and shade of a real hair follicle, creating the illusion of a fuller head of hair or a defined, close-cropped hairstyle.
Who is it for?
- Men and women experiencing thinning hair or diffuse loss
- Receding hairlines, crown thinning or bald spots
- Camouflaging scars from hair transplants or injury
- Creating a defined hairline for a shaved or buzzed style
- Adding density between existing hair for a fuller look
The process
- Consultation. We map your hairline, discuss your goals, and select a pigment blend matched to your natural hair color.
- Session 1. A light foundation layer is laid down — soft enough to look natural as it heals.
- Sessions 2–3. Density and definition are built in layers, usually 10–14 days apart, until we reach your ideal look.
- Refresh. Most clients return every 3–5 years for a touch-up to maintain crisp results.
Healing & aftercare
- Days 1–4: keep the scalp dry — no washing, sweating or sun
- Days 5–7: gentle rinsing only, no scrubbing
- Weeks 2–4: color softens by 20–40% and settles into its true tone
- Avoid pools, saunas and direct sun for 30 days
- Long-term: daily SPF protects pigment from UV fade
How long does SMP last?
Results typically last 3–5 years before a refresh is needed. Sun exposure, skin type and skincare products all influence longevity. Because pigment fades gradually and evenly, SMP ages gracefully without sharp lines or discoloration.
